Line an 8 X 4-inch loaf pan with parchment paper and then set aside.
In a large bowl, dissolve the 2 1/4 teaspoon yeast into 1 1/2 cups warm water, then stir with a whisk for 1 minute.
Add 1 teaspoon salt and 1 Tablespoon sugar to the yeast mixture and then whisk for an additional 1 minute.
Measure and add 1 cup of flour into the water mixture and then whisk until smooth.
Add 1 more cup of flour and then whisk to combine.
Add the remaining flour in 3/4 cup amounts and then stir with a wooden spoon until all of the flour is combined and no longer sticky.
Then turn out the dough and knead for 3 minutes on a lightly floured surface.
Form the dough into a long rectangle and then lift to place it into the prepared loaf pan.
Brush the egg onto the top of the pretzel loaf with a pastry brush.
Using a sharp knife, cut two 'X' shapes into each end of the pretzel loaf tops, then sprinkle with pretzel salt.
Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes, or until the loaf is brown and a knife inserted comes out clean.
Remove the Homemade Pretzel Bread from the oven and let it rest in the pan for 5 minutes before removing and resting on a cooling rack until completely cool, then slice with a serrated knife and serve!
Notes
To make the parchment paper lay flat in the loaf pan, crumble it up in your hand and then smooth it out before laying it in the pan, then set aside.
