Breakfast for dinner is one of our families’ favorite meals. To mix it up, our kids decided on having Waffles instead of Pancakes. With the cost of some meals upwards to $20, this meal for Homemade from Scratch Waffles is under $7.00 for ten.

Most of the ingredients in Waffles are typically pantry staples. Having baking powder and flour on hand can then make this recipe super inexpensive and easy to accomplish. For simplicity, below is a cost breakdown to make one batch of Waffles that produces around ten pancakes on average. When we have Homemade Scratch Waffles, we always make a triple batch to then have enough.
Cost of each ingredient:
Flour 1 1/2 cups $0.54
1 Tablespoon Sugar $0.06
1 teaspoon Salt $0.04
3 Tablespoons Butter $0.39
1 teaspoon Vanilla $0.20
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon $0.17
1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg $0.15
3 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder $0.54
1 egg $0.08
The total cost to make one batch of Waffles is $2.17.
So, when we make a triple batch, it costs our family $6.51, which made a total of ten Waffles, costing $0.65 each.

If you were to go to IHOP for a Belgian Waffle, it would cost $9.79.
For ten Waffles there, you’re looking at spending well over $100 without tip.
The price, especially with a family of six, is one of the most important reasons why our kitchen is a From Scratch Kitchen.
1 1/2 cup flour
3 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 3/4-2 cups milk
3 Tbsp butter
1. Plug in and then let the Waffle Maker rest to warm.
I do not have a lot of small appliances, they include a coffee maker, toaster, Crock-Pot, two large griddles and this Waffle Maker.
2. In a large bowl, sift together 1 1/2 cups flour, 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 Tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
3. In a medium bowl, measure and then pour in 1 3/4 cup milk.
4. Add 1 egg and 1 teaspoon Homemade Vanilla Extract to the milk, then mix well.
By making your own Vanilla Extract, you can help to dramatically lower the cost of baked goods.
Store bought Pure Vanilla Extract costs $4.79 an ounce compared to Homemade that costs $1.72 an ounce.
4. In a microwavable bowl, melt the 3 Tablespoons butter, and then let it sit to cool before adding to the wet ingredients. Do not add warm butter with the eggs as it can cause the eggs to cook before you want them to.
5. Add the melted and cooled butter to the wet ingredients, then whisk well to combine.
Mix the wet into the dry ingredients
6. Add the wet ingredients to the dry in the large bowl, then using a whisk, whisk well to fully combine the ingredients, adding more milk as needed so the batter is not clumpy but smooth.
5. Spray the Waffle Maker with a non-stick spray on the top and bottom.
6. Using a measuring cup, scoop out batter and then pour onto the hot griddle so the entire surface is covered in a thin layer of batter.
7. Close the Waffle Maker and then flip it over, then let it cook the batter until it is done, and the Waffle is slightly browned.
Our Waffle Maker did have a timer that was engaged when it was pushed by a button.
As this maker is over ten years old, the timer no longer works so the doneness needs to be measured by the look and not the time.
8. Cook the rest of the Waffles and then stack them on a plate.
9. Finally, serve the Waffles with butter and maple syrup.

- Plug in and then let the Waffle Iron rest to warm.
- In a large bowl, sift together 1 1/2 cups flour, 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 Tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
- In a medium bowl, measure and then pour in 1 3/4 cup milk.
- Add 1 egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla to the milk, then mix well.
- In a microwavable bowl, melt the 3 Tablespoons butter, and then let it sit to cool before adding to the wet ingredients.
- Spray the Waffle Iron with a non-stick spray on the top and bottom.
- Using a measuring cup, scoop out batter and then pour onto the hot griddle so the entire surface is covered in a thin layer of batter.
- Close the Waffle Iron and then flip it over, then let it cook the batter until it is done, and the Waffle is slightly browned.
- Cook the rest of the Waffles and then stack them on a plate.
