For dinner last night we had Reubens. These are actually amazingly easy to make and even more amazingly delicious. However, when I looked in the fridge and pantry, we did not have all of the necessary ingredients to make Reubens. One of the ingredients was 1000 Island Dressing, so I decided to make it from scratch.

Cost breakdown for this recipe

Making 1000 Island Dressing from scratch not only tastes SO much better than any bottle ever bought, but it actually costs not as much as you’d think. Below is a cost breakdown of each ingredient and how much the total for this dressing recipe cost and also a comparison to store bought varieties.

1 cup mayonnaise $1.00
1/4 cup sweet relish $0.21
1/4 cup ketchup $0.09
1 Tbsp white vinegar $0.01
1 Tbsp white sugar $0.01
1 Tbsp minced garlic $0.15
1/2 onion, finely diced $0.10

The total cost to make this homemade from scratch 1000 Island Dressing was $1.57.
Mind you, this was 18 ounces of homemade 1000 Island Dressing. If you were to buy a bottle at the store, a typical bottle gives 16 ounces and then costs $0.15 per ounce. My homemade dressing cost $0.08 an ounce! For five minutes of work, I saved our family $0.58. If you were to buy a name brand dressing, like Ken’s which cost $3.59, the savings would be bigger. At $3.59 a bottle, costing $0.22 an ounce, my savings instead of buying from the store would be $2.02.

That doesn’t seem like a lot of money, however, when you think of it compounded, adding all the items you could make from scratch instead of buying, you do end up saving so much money.

What to use 1000 Island Dressing With

When I was younger, 1000 Island Dressing was NOT the dressing that was high on my list. It wasn’t even on a list of any items I would eat.

Now, in my mid 30’s, this is one of my favorite dressings because that means Reubens! For dinner this night, we had Reubens. Click the link below for my recipe on how to make Reubens.

This 1000 Island Dressing tastes so much fresher than anything you can buy from a bottle.
And as an added bonus, using fresh ingredients helps to reduce any chances of an allergy attack.

Directions for 1000 Island Dressing

1. Into a measuring cup, measure and then add 1 cup mayonnaise to a medium bowl. Feel free to use premade mayonnaise or homemade mayonnaise.

2. Measure and then add 1/4 cup sweet relish to the mayonnaise in the medium bowl. Make sure it is sweet relish and not dill or spicy as it will alter the flavor of the 1000 Island Dressing.

3. To the bowl, measure and then add 1/4 cup ketchup.

4. Then add 1 Tablespoon white vinegar to the bowl.

5. Next, add 1 Tablespoon white sugar to the bowl with the other ingredients for the 1000 Island Dressing.

6. Then add 1 Tablespoon minced garlic to the medium bowl. Lately I have been using jar minced garlic as it has become increasingly hard to find fresh garlic that isn’t already rotten or bad.

7. On a cutting board, dice 1/2 an onion, or as close to 2-4 Tablespoons, and then add it to the bowl.

8. Add 1/8 teaspoon black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon salt to the ingredients in the bowl.

9. Once all ingredients are added to the medium bowl, stir them well.

10. Once all of the ingredients are mixed well, add the 1000 Island Dressing to a bowl and store it in the fridge for 1 hour, allowing the flavors to blend and combine well. When done, and ready to use, remove the jar from the fridge and use it with your recipe.
