Cost for this project

Organizing your closet doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Trust me, the bins and totes and containers will not help you organize your closet. Those extra things in your closet will just cost you a small fortune and you will have to spend so much time and effort setting it all up.

Depending on whether you use full-sized clothes pins or small ones will change the cost for this project.

At our local Dollar Tree, a pack of mini clothespins was $1.25.

At Walmart a 50-pack is $1.28.
At Walmart a 100-pack is $2.78.
At Walmart a mini pack of 50 is $1.97.

At Dollar Tree, a 45-pack is $1.25.

The total cost to this project was $2.50 as two packs of mini-clothes pins was used.

Why mini clothes pins?

What is the reason mini-sized clothes pins were used?

Mini clothes pins were used for many reasons.

  • The first was because the minis are much cuter than the larger version. Seriously, they are adorable and little and cute. Small things are just super likeable!
  • The second reason was because regular-sized would be overly seen in the closet. Mini clothes pins are smaller and can be hidden better than regular sized clothes pins.
  • The third reason was because I was at Dollar Tree and the mini clothes pins were available to buy. You can choose to buy large or small clothes pins, either work well.

Steps to Organize your Clothes

The first step in how to organize your clothes is to buy the clothespins and then number the clothes pins.

Make sure to label them 1, 2, 3, and so on if you desire. Personally, I choose to wash them after three times wearing them, so 3 is enough for me.

Using the permanent marker, mark one or both sides of the clothes pin with a number then place the marked clothes pin into a container.

When you wear a shirt or top, then place a clothes pin on it with the #1.

If you wear the top again, place a clothes pin on it with a #2.

With the clothes pins on them, you then have a complete representation of what shirts are clean and have been worn often.

A Second Way to Organize your Clothes

The second way to organize your clothes is to figure out what you wear each year verses what you do not.

On New Years, turn around every hanger in your closet so they are hanging backwards.

When you replace your shirt, remember to turn the hanger back around the regular way and rehang the shirt.

At the end of the year, anything that is still hanging backwards you then know was not worn throughout the year.

What to do with these clothes? At the end of the year, if you choose to do so, you can then donate the unworn clothes to free up space in your closet. You would be surprised at just how many clothes you do not wear each year and how you will try to utilize each item in your closet.

closet organizing tips

For under $3, you can organize your closet and keep track of what you wear and how often to wash your tops. By using clothes pins and marking your tops for how many times you wear them, you can also keep track of what clothes you do and do not wear.
