My grandparents live on a few acres. Growing up, they had a huge garden in their backyard. Tomatoes, cucumbers, butternut squash, lettuce and much more. Their front yard had many apple trees and as kids, it was great to walk the garden nibbling grapes with my siblings and cousins.

As my grandparents are getting older, the garden has fallen to the wayside. This past spring, two of my aunts decided to take it over and rebuilt the garden. Fall of 2023 yielded many cucumbers, butternut squashes and a plethora of grapes.

My aunts picked so many grapes that they gave away a tub of them to me and our family. These are concord grapes with seeds, and making Grape Jam was the first thing that came to mind.

Recipe

Grape Jam Ingredients

3 1/2 pounds Grapes
1 package Sure Jell Pectin
7 cups Sugar

Canning Supplies

  • Canning Jar with rack
  • Funnel
  • Ladle
  • Jars lids, rims
  • Cooling Rack

Matthew and Elliana helped me to remove the grapes from the stems. There were SO many grapes! These concord grapes were very tart and had many seeds inside. We had to check for little bugs as well, as they were hidden within the leaves and grapes throughout the entire bin.

Grape Jam Directions

Remove the grapes from the stems and remove all of the leaves, bugs and debris. Then place the grapes in a large bowl. Make sure to also sort out any opened grapes as they could be bad. Also, any overly wrinkled or moldy grapes should not make it into the bowl.

Fill the bowl of grapes with water and then add 1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar and 1/4 cup Baking Soda. Let the mixture sit and bubble, causing any remaining dirt to clean the grapes. The baking soda will cause the Cider Vinegar to bubble vigorously.

Once the grapes are clean, rinse the grapes in a sink colander to remove any cider vinegar mixture or leftover debris.

If the grapes have seeds, use a blender to blend the grapes well, then strain out the seeds using a strainer. Using a blender was the easiest way we found to remove the seeds.

Transfer the 3 1/2 pounds of clean and seedless grapes to a 6-Quart pot, then add 1 package Sure Jell Fruit Pectin and mix well.

Bring the fruit to a boil over high heat making sure to stir constantly. This could take some time to bring to a rolling boil.

Add the 7 cups Sugar and stir well until you feel the sugar dissolved, then bring to a rolling boil for 1 minute stirring constantly. Bringing the sugar in the grapes to a boil can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes.

Remove the pot from heat and then skim off any froth that has formed on the top, then ladle into sterilized pint jars with a canning funnel leaving 1/4-inch headspace.

Remove air bubbles from the jam by sliding a knife along the edges.

Wipe all of the rims clean with a clean and damp towel.

Place lids on jar and screw on bands until fingertip tight. Do not tighten the lids all the way!

Place jars in a canner rack and then carefully place rack into canner with simmering water. Make sure the water is 1 to 2-inches above the jar lids. The water in the canner should be heated prior to adding the jam jars.

Bring to a boil and then process the Grape Jam jars for 10 minutes.

Remove the Grape Jam jars from the water using a jar lifter tongs and rest until cool on a towel or cooling rack. Don’t tighten the rims yet.

After 24 hours, check lids to make sure they popped. If not, that jar should go right into the fridge as it didn’t seal. If sealed properly, store in a cool dry place, remember to additionally add a date and name on the jar so you know what is inside.
