Double cook Brussel Sprouts

The trick to making the perfect Brussel Sprouts is to double cook them! In the past, I have cooked them solely in the oven by roasting them and also have just steamed them. However, if you steam them first and then roast them in the oven you get the benefits of both. Once the sprouts are steamed, they become soft. By adding the roasting in the oven, the sprouts get a great nutty flavor and the edges get a fantastic crispiness.
In addition to having a great flavor, you can lift the sprouts up more by adding chopped bacon or balsamic vinaigrette.

Cost for this recipe

The cost for this recipe was very small.
For most side dish recipes, it does cost quite a bit. However, this recipe for Brussel Sprouts cost $2.75, which is the cost of the raw sprouts themselves.
There are not any other costs for this recipe.

Directions

1. Firstly, wash the sprouts in a sink colander. Once clean, place them on a cutting board and then using a knife, cut the ends off of the sprouts.

2. Once the ends are cut off, as they get browned, cut the Brussel Sprouts in half. Doing so helps them to cook much better than being whole.

3. Place the cut Brussel Sprouts into a steamer basket in a medium pot with 1-2 inches of water in the bottom and then cook on medium-high for 5-7 minutes.

4. As the sprouts steam, spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray, you can also choose to lay a sheet of aluminum foil on the baking sheet for easier clean up.

5. Once the sprouts are cooked, the color will become a bright and vibrant green. Then take off the lid and turn off the heat.

6. Place the steamed Brussel Sprouts onto the prepared baking dish and then flip them so they are all cut-side down.

7. If desired, season the sprouts with salt, pepper and garlic powder, or whichever seasoning you desire. Salt helps to cut any residual bitterness of the sprouts.

8. Bake the sprouts for 10-15 minutes, or until browned. Feel free to season with extra salt once they are fully baked. For an extra roasted flavor, feel free to flip the sprouts halfway through and continue cooking.

Enjoy!
