This is my second time making Homemade Tortillas. A few weeks ago, I bought a tortilla press and absolutely love it. Originally, I got it to make flour tortillas, but we have fallen in love with homemade corn tortillas and do not know if we will go back. They are so tasty, fluffy, gluten free and fat free! Honestly, they are perfection. It took a few tries to make them, to find the right size and amount, the right flour, and the perfect heat. However, once the trial was over, we were hooked on Homemade Tortillas.

What will you need for Homemade Tortillas?
I make a double batch of Homemade Corn Tortillas, mostly because we have 6 people, and it seems like we never have enough. This recipe is quick to make and took only twenty-five minutes start to finish. Maseca is the recommended corn flour to make corn tortillas.
Corn tortillas, made from scratch, only need two ingredients: Maseca and water. You will also need a way to mix your ingredients and a tortilla press. In the past, I have used a rolling pin, but this literally takes an hour to make twenty tortillas while being really hard on your wrists. Having tendinitis in my wrists from a skiing accident, using a rolling pin can leave me in pain for days.

Cost for Homemade Tortillas
I found a 4.4-pound bag of Maseca at a local grocery store, Woodman’s, that sells a wide range of natural, organic, gluten free, and Hispanic foods. The cost for this bag was $3.09. This bag of Maseca is thirteen cups, with two cups making nineteen tortillas. Out of this bag you can get a grand total of 123 Homemade Corn Tortillas, making each tortilla $0.02.
The cost to buy a bag of corn tortillas is $1.65 at ALDI and $2.29 and Meijer for thirty tortillas. This costs $0.07 for each tortilla making Homemade Corn Tortillas 3.5% cheaper than buying from the store.
For example, if I were to buy the amount of tortillas that can be made with one bag of Maseca, it would cost $11.45 buying five bags of a thirty-count tortilla. This may not seem like a lot of money, saving $8.36, but for our family, we eat tacos weekly.
Weekly buying 1-pack of thirty tortillas for a year $119.08
Weekly making thirty-eight tortillas for a year $39.52
Saving our family $79.56 a year! And that was just for making Homemade Corn Tortillas! Making one small change not only saves our family so much money, but additionally pays for the tortilla press we bought to make our own tortillas. Small changes pay!
Homemade Corn Tortillas Recipe
Ingredients for Homemade Corn Tortillas
2 cups Maseca
1 1/2 cups water
That’s it, only two ingredients! When looking into how to make tortillas, there are SO many recipes. I have tried making flour tortillas, and as delicious as they are, the recipes do not turn out as well as a store-bought brand. When I found Maseca, I was super impressed.

Corn Tortilla Directions
1. Measure 2 cups Maseca and then pour into KitchenAid mixing bowl.
Maseca can be mixed with a fork or a large spoon, but I chose to use my KitchenAid mixer. Just make sure whichever way you choose that the bowl is large enough to not splash corn flour everywhere.

2. Measure 1 1/2 cups water and then pour into mixing bowl with the Maseca corn flour.

3. Lock mixer and then turn on low, mixing for 2 minutes.

4. When mixed, measure 1.5 ounces of corn mix and roll into a ball about the size of a golf ball if you do not have a kitchen scale.
1.5 was the amount that I found that was a great size for our family. The recommended 1 ounce was too small! The next time we made corn tortillas, they were closer to 2oz.

5. When all of the mixture is measured and rolled cover them with a damp towel, so they do not dry out .
Do not skip this step as no one wants a dry and crumbly tortilla. You can either roll them ahead of time and cover with a towel OR scoop out your desired amount and roll and press as you go.

6. Place a piece of plastic wrap on the bottom of a tortilla press. Place a ball on and cover with a second piece of plastic wrap to help keep the tortilla off the press. This also helps with cleanup and the press not being so messy.

7. Gently place tortilla press cover down and use handle and press. Recently we bought this tortilla press on Amazon because I love having fast delivery and a great price.

8. Open tortilla press and remove plastic wrap top and then carefully remove corn tortilla from second plastic wrap, do this carefully to not break the tortilla. Keeping the rest of the balls covered in a damp towel will help the tortillas from cracking.

9. On a griddle warmed to 350 degrees, place a tortilla carefully on the surface and cook for 30 seconds on each side, then flipping 3 times for each tortilla.

10. When done, place cooked tortilla on a plate in between a towel to stay warm.

- Plastic Wrap
Ingredients

Instructions

- When mixed, measure 1.5 ounces of corn mix and roll into a ball, or about the size of a golf ball if you do not have a kitchen scale.

- Open the tortilla press and then remove plastic wrap top and carefully remove corn tortilla from second plastic wrap.
- On a griddle warmed to 350 degrees, place a tortilla carefully on the surface and then cook for 30 seconds on each side, making sure to flip each tortilla 3 times.
- When done, place cooked tortilla on a plate in between a towel to stay warm.
